This photo of Mary Todd Lincoln, with the ghost of her late husband, Abraham Lincoln, was taken by William H. Mumler, a self-proclaimed “spirit photographer.” Mumler, who made a good deal of money from many people who had lost loved ones in the Civil War, claimed that spirits could be revealed during a photograph’s development process. In 1869, he was charged with fraud, but was not convicted. Today, most regard his photos as fake.
