On November 9, 1989 the Berlin Wall fell, leading to the Reunification of Germany the following year. The Berlin Wall, which had separated Communist East Germany from Democratic West Germany since 1961, had been a symbol of the Cold War, and its destruction was the beginning of the end of that four-and-a-half-decade struggled between the United States and the Soviet Union.
